St John’s College: independent education from the heart
Since its formation in 1987, St John’s College has achieved an enviable reputation as a centre of academic excellence both in Wales and England. This was recognised in June 2023 when it was named the 6th Best Value Independent School in the UK based on fee-grade ratio by the Telegraph. This prestigious accolade followed on from being the Sunday Times ‘Parent Power’ Top Independent School in Wales for Academic Outcomes in 2021.
A Level results 2024: A* – 33% A*/A – 74% A*-B – 95%
GCSE results 2024: A* – 53% A*/A – 79% A*-B – 93%
Academic success has been a hallmark of St John’s for many years and 2024 has been another highly successful year. At A Level, 95% of students achieved A*-B grades.
At GCSE, the story was much the same with 53% of all grades A*s and an equally impressive 93% of candidates achieving A*-B. 13 pupils achieved straight A* grades.
Achieving this level of consistency across both GCSE and A Level is a testament to the hard work and resilience of the pupils and students, along with the dedication of the teaching staff. Underpinning all this is an outstanding programme of pastoral care and support centred around the school’s Catholic ethos. The school takes great pride in offering all pupils from Nursery to Sixth Form much more than just the means to develop their full academic potential. Every pupil, regardless of ability, is nurtured and supported through their educational journey
Not just academic!
Although academic success is a strong feature of the school, life at St John’s College is not just about achieving the highest grades.
The vast co-curricular programme provides ample opportunity to engage in public speaking and debating, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a wide range of sports and volunteering. In the performing arts, pupils and students have the opportunity to achieve LAMDA qualifications and play in our musical ensembles such as the concert orchestra and jazz band, not to mention the opportunity to sing in the Metropolitan Cathedral choir, Cardiff. The school has also gained a reputation for engineering excellence, with our Sixth Formers achieving success in the CREST Award. The F1 in Schools Challenge has elevated St John’s onto the world stage with Team Blackout winning 2nd place at the World Finals in 2022 and Team Firestorm competing in Singapore last September.
