Team Blackout on the starting grid -World Finals F1iS 2022
Team Blackout, will be representing Wales as part of Team GB at the F1 in Schools World Finals in Silverstone this July.
F1 in Schools is a world wide competition that introduces STEM subjects to pupils from 9-18.
St John’s College has been involved in this project since 2011 when the current Headmaster, Mr Shaun Moody introduced it to the school as a lunchtime club. The club went from strength to strength and the Entry Class level of the project is now embedded into the year 7 curriculum. A legacy has been built with previous teams reaching National Finals and Infinity Racing (a team of inspiring 14 year olds), who reached the finals in Abu Dhabi, 2019. However, this is the pinnacle of a three year journey for our group of talented students in year 10 and 11.
Not content with winning the Welsh Regional finals at every stage of the competition, this year at Nationals, Blackout broke the UK Record for fastest car with a time of 1.036 seconds.
Whilst studying hard for their GCSE examinations, the team have been pitching to companies to gain sponsorship. They are also inspiring future generations by investing in STEM activities with the children in the Infant and Junior sections of the school. As if this wasn’t enough, the team have pledged to work as sustainably as possible, reducing waste and creating a minimal carbon footprint.
